2008?

  1. It’s been more than ten years. Closing in on twelve really. Today is your birthday.

I made it up to the top of Dana’s Third Pillar for the first time ten years later. Took a friend, midday wind and bright sunshine along with me. The plateau was awash with wildflowers. The Rock Cress and Alpine Columbine were jaw dropping. Watched Clark’s Nutcrackers mob a hawk. Marveled at the way sunlight sparked through sap drops on the Foxtail Pines. Grinned huge at the incredible echos you can set up at the edge of the plateau just to the south of the pillar.

I have a sweater that makes me think of you every time I put it on. It’s green and very soft. It’s a little oversized and super cozy. And it has a lot of holes, most of them smallish. It makes me think I should set myself up for an embroidery project. It wouldn’t be to close up the holes, but to stabilize them, decorate them a bit, maybe a patch on the elbow and to tuck these words into a small spot: Jeff Maurer Memorial Sweater “What? There’s way more sweater left than holes. It’s still good!”

Always in my heart. Always missing you and forever grateful for the grace and joy and silliness and music you swept into my life my friend. Oh how I hope you’re soaring free.
